I think they do this by subtly targeting different groups of people in their marketing and branding through different colors and emotions. I don’t know how well social media might work with shampoo as opposed to to colorful tv ads, but there’s a large trend towards Facebook promotion in many types of business as illustrated by the number of companies listed at http://www.buyfacebookfansreviews.com that help businesses get Facebook fans and other similar services. This subtle different promotion to different demographics can be tracked easier in the digital age and this gives smart businesses an edge if they are smart about how they approach things and track everything. I don’t think there are any hard and fast rules regarding how to promote a product other than being able to react quickly to change.
